Axe Valley Success!

A team of students from the Axe Valley Community College have last weekend taken part in the Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportive. The event, which is run by the Mid Devon Cycling Club, is a 104km cycle ride on the roads of Dartmooor which this year attracted over 2500 participants.

The team of 13 Year 10 students have been working towards their goal of completing the gruelling ride for the last 6 months. They started by gaining sponsorship from local firms for a team jersey which they designed themselves. Then the training started, with students riding hundreds of miles to build their fitness enough to tackle the 65 mile route over the steep Dartmoor hills.

Sunday 26th June was the big day and the youngsters set off at 8:00am from Kingsteignton feeling both nervous and excited. The early morning mist soon cleared from the moor and temperatures rose making it really hard going. At the half way point in Princetown everyone was already tired due to the heat, but after some food and drink the students were ready for the home leg via Moretonhampstead and the Teign Valley. Despite lots of support along the route from parents and school staff, the whole team were taken aback by the number of cheering spectators that greeted them as they crossed the finishing line approximately 8 hours later.

The event organisers were so impressed by the achievement of the youngsters that they presented them with special gold medals, which was a totally unexpected end to a fantastic day.

I could not be more proud of the students. The commitment they have shown over the last 6 months is a wonderful example to all young people. Most of them had never ridden a road bike 4 months ago, so I am hugely impressed by what they’ve achieved.
