Axe Valley Cycle Team

Since the start of the year, 13 year 10 students at Axe Valley Community College have been taking part in an exciting new activity which has tested both their business and enterprise skills and their physical endurance. The activity is called the Axe Valley Cycle Team Challenge.

Modelled on a professional cycling team, the activity consists of two challenges. The first challenge is that they will be taking part in the Dartmoor Classic cyclosportive, which is a 104km (65 mile) long cycle ride which takes place on the roads of Dartmoor on 26th June. To prepare for the event the students have been training hard for nearly 4 months on the roads of Devon, Dorset and Somerset. The second challenge that students faced was to produce a custom designed cycling kit to wear on the event and for training. The team had to design their own kit, decide which company will make it for them and pay for it by getting sponsorship from local businesses. The students invited businesses to a ‘business breakfast’ event at the college, where they gave a presentation and were able to secure the necessary sponsorship from Axminster Carpets, Selec Systems, Axminster Printing, Morgan York and The Rotary Club of Axminster.

As well as being designed to be a personal challenge, the activity has allowed students to work with the Rotary Club of Axminster to raise money for a specially adapted tricycle for a local disabled boy. Tickets are now on sale for the ‘Bike 4 Ben’ competition whereby people can try to guess the average finishing time for the team and win £50. The aim is to raise a total of £1000.

With less than 2 weeks to go the students have just one training ride left (a 60 mile trip from Axminster to Teignmouth) before the big day. The team will be appearing in the arena at the Axe Vale Festival on the morning of Saturday 25th June, where we hope the public will give them all a good send off before they make their way to Dartmoor later that day. They have all worked extremely hard to try to complete this great challenge and regardless of what happens on the day of the ride they have already achieved a great deal. We at Axe Valley believe that the team have demonstrated the very best of what the young people in our community can achieve when faced with a challenge.
