Welcome to the 2009 Classic

Welcome to the lead up to the 2009 Dartmoor Sportif.  A number of you may well have ridden the 2007 and 2008 events so know what is in store – as in 2008 there is a “Lot of Moor for you Money” plus many other improvements.

The members of the promoting Mid-Devon Cycling Club / Colin Lewis Cycles Team want you to have a memorable and enjoyable experience when you ride the 2009 Sportif. The best way to achieve this is for you to prepare for the demanding course as well as you can in advance of the event.  One way of doing this is to join our club when it goes out on its Sunday Club rides.

The club runs leave our HQ, the one used for the Sportif, which is at the Abbrook Park Sports & Social Club, Strap Lane, Kingsteignton. The departure time is 09.00 but it is wise to plan to get there at least 5 minutes before the off.

As the club is blessed with a number of very experienced riders you will be sure to pick up a number of tips that will make life on two wheels all the more pleasurable,

The club runs are split into at least 2 rides. One is fairly fast and the other a bit more laid back. We also arrange for someone to be on hand to look after newcomers. The rides usually return in time for a late lunch. However there is always the opportunity to turn back after 60 to 90 minutes when a number of the riders make their early return in order to comply with “domestic” orders.

Please do not think that our club rides are a step too far because we can help you along the way. As above we have now arranged for an easier Sunday ride so you can build up your confidence and physical ability to such an extent that you can enjoy the longer Sunday rides. This ride will be lead by a rotation of the experienced club riders.

Additionally starting early in the New year for the lady cyclists there will be some introductory rides from the Colin Lewis Cycles Shop, Dartmouth Road, PAIGNTON. These rides will be on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 09.30 and Saturday mornings at 10.00.  Call Lisa Aske on 01803 553095 for further details.

The club would like to stress that it is not all lycra, head down and a headlong thrash. We do recommend that at this time of the year you wear sufficient clothing to keep you warm.  This means that shorts are not appropriate and jerseys should overlap and not leave exposed flesh.  Helmets are strongly recommended plus gloves or if it is a mild day then mitts.
